Looking Forward: Finding Light in the New Year
For me, attitude is everything as I navigate the unpredictable symptoms and flares of my illnesses. While I wouldn’t wish chronic pain, the fear of the unknown, or the many hardships that come with it on anyone, these experiences have taught me humility and kindness.
As I step into a new year, I look forward to spreading light through acts of kindness, even on my toughest days. This journey has introduced me to incredible people I wouldn’t have met otherwise. It has shifted my perspective and deepened my appreciation for this wonderful community that unites to love and support one another.
Day-to-Day Wins: Small Practices, Big Changes
One of the most impactful changes I’ve made is learning to listen to my body—though it’s far easier said than done. Therapy has been a huge help in teaching me to recognize when I need rest and honor that need.
Starting my mornings slowly has been another game-changer. Instead of focusing on the pain I wake up with, I’ve learned to shift my mindset toward gratitude for another day. I take time to think about what I want to accomplish and how best to use my energy. Celebrating even the smallest victories helps me stay grounded and positive.
Advice for Fellow Chronic Illness Warriors: Embrace Your Pace
If I’ve learned anything, it’s this: you have to do what works for you and set boundaries that honor your needs.
Early on, I struggled with the advice people gave me—“Have you tried resting more? Yoga? A gluten-free diet?” It took time to realize these comments often come from a place of care, even if they miss the mark.
Now, I focus on how I interpret their words. I remind myself to be grateful that someone cares enough to ask. When I need to, I gently redirect the conversation, saying something like, “I appreciate you asking, but let’s talk about dogs today.” Open and honest communication makes a world of difference.
Celebrating Small Wins: Why They Matter
Every day is a win, even the hard ones. Like many others, I put a lot of pressure on myself—worrying whether I’m being a good enough spouse, friend, or person.
But I’ve learned to focus on myself, my boundaries, and my feelings. By doing so, small wins transform into big ones. I try to focus on the good, help others, and believe in the power of community.
Losing friends because of my illness has been painful, but it’s also helped me cherish the people who show up for me. These are the ones who matter. Life is too short to dwell on the small things or to respond to others with anything but kindness.
A Mindset Shift: Choosing Kindness
This healing journey has taught me the value of kindness—not just toward others, but toward myself. The challenges of chronic illness can be isolating and overwhelming, but focusing on the light, however small, has been transformational.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: good finds good. Let’s continue to celebrate each other, support one another, and choose kindness every single day.
