The Stoma Sisters: A Bond Beyond Illness
One of the most meaningful connections I’ve made is with two incredible women, Samantha (@samantha_i_always_am) and Bethy (@bethanypurnell). Together, we started a group chat called “The Stoma Sisters.” Our connection goes beyond having an ileostomy—we support each other, celebrate victories, and offer a safe space to vent on difficult days. They are truly my stoma sisters, and I am so grateful for them.
Taking Charge of My Healthcare Journey
Throughout my journey, I’ve learned how important it is to speak up for myself in medical settings. I always ask questions, request doctors to repeat information if needed, and remind myself that no one knows my body better than I do. If I need answers, I won’t hesitate to ask. Your health is your priority, and advocating for yourself is essential.
Overcoming a Traumatic Medical Experience
In 2017, I had a bowel obstruction that required surgery. Unfortunately, my surgeon accidentally nicked my bowel, leading to sepsis, an abscess, and a necrotic colon. A second emergency surgery was performed to place an ileostomy. After spending over three weeks in the ICU, I was moved to MedSurg, where I encountered a moment that deeply affected me.
My surgeon, dismissing the severity of what I had endured, told me, "The only way you’ll feel better is if you chop your head off." He repeated this several times before walking out. I refused to let him see how much his words hurt me, but as soon as he left, I broke down. My nurse, who witnessed the exchange, agreed that he had gone too far. That moment was incredibly painful, but I refused to let his words define me.
Embracing Strength and Support
Despite these challenges, I have found incredible strength through the support of my community and the power of self-advocacy. The friendships I have built, like the one with my Stoma Sisters, and the lessons I’ve learned about standing up for myself have shaped me into the person I am today. If you’re navigating a difficult health journey, remember—you are never alone. There is a community ready to uplift you, just as I have found mine.
