A Beautiful Community
There are truly no words to describe how much the community has changed my life. Suddenly becoming bedridden right before my senior year of high school was devastating. Many friends I thought I’d have for life stopped responding to messages, leaving me feeling so alone. I’m utterly amazed at how this community lifts people up. They understand your struggles like no one else because they’ve been through it too. I’ve learned critical information that my doctors never even mentioned. The willingness these unwell people have to help others after being let down is just beyond me. Everyone is incredibly resilient and kind.
Finding Support in My Soul Sister, Oriana
I have so many beautiful people that help me daily, but my soul sister, Oriana (@learningitsnotlinear), particularly comes to mind. She is one of my biggest role models, and I consider her my older sister. Having lived with ME/CFS for years, she provides fantastic insight. Oriana shared her story about how she used to be in the same exact spot I was—in bed. Witnessing her journey of becoming less severe and able to do more was beyond inspiring. When I was in the complete dark about my new illness, she was and continues to be there to guide me through with humor, truth, and kindness.
Being Prepared for Appointments
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of being prepared. I recommend creating a binder that you can easily grab for every appointment or ER visit. In mine, I have my medical records and history, as well as information and research on long COVID and ME/CFS, as many doctors aren’t familiar with these diagnoses. Having this organized information readily available can make a significant difference in navigating the healthcare system.
Discovering My Inner Strength
Throughout this whole journey, I’ve learned just how much strength I’m capable of. I’ve found my voice and become more assertive. I was taught to trust doctors unconditionally, but after nearly losing my father and myself due to medical negligence, I realized that doctors aren’t perfect—they don’t have all the answers. I know my body better than anyone and deserve to be listened to. This newfound understanding has empowered me to advocate for my health and well-being.
