Navigating life with a chronic illness isn’t easy, but Caitlin has found that embracing the small moments and celebrating even the smallest victories make a world of difference. Here are some of the things that bring Caitlin joy and help her stay positive on her chronic illness journey:
Seeing the World Through My Siblings’ Eyes
One of my favorite parts of the day is seeing my four-year-old twin siblings when they finish school. Hearing about their day and experiencing the world through their eyes is a reminder of the simple joys in life. Their excitement, curiosity, and laughter bring so much happiness, even on the hardest days.
Appreciating the Little Things
I’ve learned to appreciate the things I once took for granted—having a bed to sleep in, a home-cooked meal on the table every evening (even if I can’t eat that day), and a loving support system. These small things mean the world to me. Without them, I don’t know where I would be right now. Taking a step back to acknowledge these blessings has changed my perspective.
Sharing My Wins
It’s easy to talk about the struggles—declining health, tough days, and the emotional toll of chronic illness. But I’ve realized it’s just as important to celebrate the wins, no matter how small. Whether it’s getting a new mobility aid, starting a medication that helps, or simply having a good day, I make sure to share these moments with my friends, family, therapist, and advocacy community. Celebrating progress, no matter how small, is just as important as acknowledging the hardships.
The Power of Community
One of the greatest gifts of sharing my journey online has been the community I’ve built. It feels like having a big group of best friends who cheer me on and lift me up through every hurdle, challenge, and success. Knowing that I’m not alone in this journey has made all the difference.
A Reminder: Don’t Isolate Yourself
I know how easy it can be to withdraw, especially when things get tough. But reaching out to others who understand what you’re going through is so important. Finding people who can validate your emotions and truly relate to your experiences makes all the difference. You are not alone, and there are so many people who want to support you.
At the end of the day, it’s about holding onto the little moments, finding gratitude in what we have, and leaning on those who lift us up. No matter what challenges come our way, we can still find joy in the journey.
