Living with a chronic illness, Carla has learned that even the smallest moments can bring light into her day. It’s not about the big milestones anymore—it’s about appreciating the little things that bring comfort and happiness. Continue reading to learn about the few ways Carla finds joy in her everyday.
The Simple Joy of Morning Coffee
No matter how I’m feeling, one small moment that brings me joy every day is making my morning coffee and taking the first couple of sips. It’s one of the few things I can enjoy, and it helps me start my day on a positive note.
Redefining Happiness
Before my diagnosis, I thought happiness came from achieving big goals or completing major activities. Now, I find happiness in the smaller things. Instead of focusing on what I can no longer do, I look for moments of joy each week, whether it’s a kind message from a friend or simply having a good day.
Celebrating Small Wins
Every step forward matters, no matter how small. To remind myself of my progress, I write down my wins—big or small. On the harder days, looking back at these moments helps me push through and see how far I’ve come.
Finding Unexpected Support
One of the most unexpected sources of joy and support has been the chronic illness online community. Connecting with others who understand my struggles has been a lifeline. Their advice, encouragement, and shared experiences help me navigate the challenges and remind me that I’m not alone.
Advice for Finding Joy in Difficult Times
If you’re struggling to find joy in the midst of your health challenges, give yourself time. Chronic illness changes so many aspects of life, and joy doesn’t come overnight. Be patient and kind to yourself. Allow yourself to feel all the emotions, and start small—find one thing each day that brings you even a little bit of joy or gratitude. Over time, those moments add up.
At the end of the day, joy doesn’t have to be big or loud—it can be found in the quiet moments, in the people who support you, and in the resilience you show every day.
