Finding Strength on Difficult Days
When faced with hard days, I remind myself of everything I’ve already endured—and overcome. I think of a quote from Steve Harvey:“You’ve made it through 100% of your bad days.” It’s a simple yet powerful reminder that I have always found my way through, and this time will be no different.
A New Understanding of Happiness
My outlook on happiness changed after my first major health decline. I once believed happiness came from good health, abilities, and accomplishments. But chronic illness strips those things away, making traditional happiness seem unattainable. That’s when I realized happiness is fleeting, but joy is a choice. Each day, I choose to find the good—even in difficult circumstances.
Celebrating Small Wins
Even small victories deserve recognition. Sometimes, I celebrate by spending time with my bonus nephews, buying myself flowers, or treating myself—if my body allows. Other times, I find joy in relaxing in my hammock or cuddling with my dogs. Acknowledging these moments helps me move forward.
A Message to My Past Self
If I could give my past self one piece of advice, it would be this:Seek joy, even when life feels overwhelming. It’s easy to focus on the struggles, but there is always a glimmer of joy to be found, no matter how small.
How to Find Joy Amid Health Challenges
Joy exists in everyday moments. It could be the comfort of seeing a familiar nurse at the hospital, the warmth of petting a dog, or the feeling of sunshine on your skin. It might come from simple activities—coloring, blowing bubbles, or listening to music. The key is to look for joy, even in the smallest of ways.
Chronic illness changes many things, but it doesn’t take away the ability to choose joy. Finding it, even in the smallest ways, can make all the difference.
