Appreciating the Present
Since my diagnosis, I’ve learned to slow down and enjoy the little moments. "Stop and smell the roses" has taken on a whole new meaning. I try to be more mindful of everyday beauty, whether it's the warmth of the sun on my skin, the sound of birds chirping, or the simple comfort of a quiet morning.
Finding Happiness in Hard Times
On tough days, I focus on what brings me joy—watching the sunset, playing with my pets (Simon the dog and Luna the cat), or watching a favorite movie. Looking at videos of friends and family also lifts my spirits. Sometimes, small distractions help, like listening to my favorite music, baking something sweet, or reading an uplifting book. These little joys make difficult days a little lighter.
Comfort in Simple Things
A gratitude journal helps me focus on the good in each day, no matter how small. Writing and journaling give me a safe space to express myself without judgment. Meditation has become an important practice, helping me feel grounded and at peace. I also love lighting a candle and surrounding myself with crystals to create a calming atmosphere. Soft blankets, cozy loungewear, and a warm cup of tea add extra comfort when I need it most.
Support That Keeps Me Going
My boyfriend, my mom, and my friends bring me strength and love. No matter what, they show up for me, whether through a heartfelt message, a phone call, or just sitting with me in silence. Simon and Luna stay by my side, offering companionship and comfort. Their presence reminds me that love comes in many forms.
Advice for Finding Joy
It takes time to adjust. It’s okay to grieve the changes in your life, to miss the things you used to do. But over time, you’ll find new ways to experience joy, even on the hardest days. Try different things—creative hobbies, soothing routines, or connecting with others who understand. Most importantly, remember that you’re not alone. The chronic illness community is here to support you, offering a place where you can share, learn, and feel understood.
Little Things That Bring Joy
Comfort items like Squishmallows and heating pads help me feel better physically and emotionally. Disability advocacy, modeling, and creating content give me a sense of purpose. Doing my makeup is also therapeutic—it lifts my mood and helps me feel like myself. Finding little moments to care for myself, whether through self-expression or small acts of comfort, makes a big difference.
Even with challenges, joy is possible. It may take time, but it's always worth seeking.
